SRI LANKA: FOOD, COFFEE & TRAVEL GUIDE FOR AHANGAMA, MIDIGAMA & WELIGAMA
If you’re visiting the southern part of Sri Lanka’s surf hotspot around Ahangama, Midigama & Weligama this travel guide is for you. I’ve summarized all my favorite food spots from authentic rice & curry (from which I simply can’t get enough), over to my fav coffee spot directly at the beach as well as practical tips on where to rent your scooter (Hansi is the best!) as well as where you can enjoy the best brunch and self-care time.
The small surf villages are developing fast & I only unfortunately had a short time so I wasn’t able to fully explore everything. If there is any spot that I’ve missed and shall check out next time (because I’m pretty sure I’ll be back!), please let me know.
As always I created a dedicated Google Maps list here so you can see which spots I saved on top of the ones I visited. Also I’ve shared more Sri Lanka tips & stories on my Instagram here.
Lots of love,
Magda
MY FAV SPOTS IN
PLAN B Weligama
Located in the heart of Weligama, Plan B is a really nice spot for speciality coffee, tasty food and also getting some work done in their dedicated co-working area with AC. The team is really lovely and I also loved their garden area.
Black Honey Cafe
If you’re looking for a nice spot for relaxing by the pool, soaking up the sun and great food, then you’ll need to head to black honey cafe. I really liked their mushroom toast and the view over the lush greenery as well as their coffee.
Zippi
One of my favorite spots in Ahangama is for sure this cute coffee spot. They serve high-quality speciality coffee, tasty matcha and their homemade bounty bar (with cardamom) is super tasty, There’s also a dedicated co-working area.
Jamu Surf Lodge
Where we stayed during the yoga retreat (for which I came to Sri Lanka). Loved the location directly next to coconut beach, the amazing team and the food. Their island bowl (smoothie bowl) and no butter chicken was super tasty!
Nomad Café
Located in Weligama I have been told about Nomad café already from friends so I was very happy when I finally tried their tasty speciality coffee. There’s also a cute little shop and they sell pastries - haven’t tried the food (yet) though.
Mermaid's Kitchen Ahangama
If you’re looking for the ultimate spot for sunset dinner, then you have to head to Mermaid’s kitchen. It can get busy so I’ll recommend to book a table in advance and enjoy their tasty rice and curry (vegetable / fish etc. options) with a view.
The Kip
Located in the lush greenery of Ahangama you’ll find this hidden gem offering a tasty brunch menu with build your own items such as smoothie bowl, eggs, banana bread etc. Also their coffee is super tasty & for me the go to brunch spot.
Manori's Kitchen
It’s said to be the most authentic rice and curry spot in Ahangama and dinner at Manori’s certainly was one of our favorites!. You get a wide variety of rice & curry and if you want you can add fish etc.. We loved their lentil dhal especially.
Kaffi Ahangama
After trying many coffee spots in and around Ahangama I think Kaffi directly at the ocean with the cute little garden and their amazing coffee is my favorite spot. Super relaxed vibe and you can enter to the beach directly from there too.
Soul Temple
Another great spot for coffee directly next to the ocean with a view. Their coffee and matcha is really nice and they also have a surf shop and hotel in case you want to stay longer. A bit pricy - it was the most expensive coffee I had on the trip.
Kai Ahangama
Located directly next to the beach you can overlook the beautiful ocean while sipping an amazing cup of coffee at Kai. If you’re lucky (or you reserve) you get a spot directly in front. Service wasn’t the fasted but the view is worth the wait.
La Belle
We came here as many local restaurants were closed during the new year’s celebrations and were positively surprised by their creative dishes such as carrots on feta mousse, focaccia and a tofu mushroom dish. There’s lovely sea view as well.
Lighthouse
Stunning place for sunset directly at the ocean with a lovely garden perfect to relax and watch the waves. There are also often DJ’s playing and they offer yoga - just check their schedule online.
serendipity - coffee.eat.sleep.
This lovely spot combines an amazing cafe with a cute little hotel and yoga shala. We went for their smoothie bowl (loved the one with mango, they also offer a cacao peanut butter one) and they also have amazing matcha & speciality coffee.
Sola Hotel & Mali
This newly opened hotel is offering 8 rooms, a stunning pool & a lovely cafe & restaurant. It was only open one week when we went so I didn’t try the food yet but already the coffee was amazing - so I’ll be back for sure!
Mellow Restaurant & Bar
Located next to Kabalana beach, Mellow is a lovely spot for grabbing a tasty coffee & matcha and enjoying breakfast or lunch. Their middle eastern salad was super fresh and I liked that they’re also having an AC area for escaping the heat.
