MY FAVORITE SPECIALITY COFFEE & MATCHA SHOPS IN VIENNA, AUSTRIA
I used to hate coffee - crazy right? My addiction to (really good) coffee only started recently, around 4 years on exchange in Toronto 🇨🇦 The exchange was not stressful actually, so that’s not the reason why I started drinking it, more because it was kind of a social thing to do (and I became friends with a lot of Italians, who taught me that the coffee in Canada tastes like “dirty dirty water” 😂)
As I now really can distinguish and am super picky about really good coffee, I wanted to share my appreciation for all the beautiful (oat milk) cappuccino / flat white and (iced) matcha I enjoyed over the years in Vienna. There are of course so many great specialty coffee shops/ places in Vienna, but I wanted to share my favorite with you which you shall not miss in Vienna!
To make it even easier for your find my top speciality coffee & matcha spots in Vienna (and their other branches if they have several places) in my dedicated Google Maps list here.
grey kaffee: I’m so happy this new speciality coffee shop has opened it’s doors close to my home! The beans are carefully selected and have a delicious chocolate taste. The authentic Sicilian cornetti, especially with pistacchio are just surreal and also the vegan hummus bagel is so tasty! You need to come and try it yourself!
Location: Kalvarienberggasse 32, 1170 & Pilgramgasse 6, 1050
Café Exchange
If you’re looking for a unique spot to enjoy amazing speciality coffee, high quality matcha and tasty cakes you need to head to the former post office building designed by Otto Wagner, where you’ll find café exchange. Really loved the poppyseed lemon cake & will come back to also try their lunch!
Location: Georg-Coch-Platz 2, 1010
Chasen Brew — Specialty Matcha & Coffee
This new hotspot serves not only amazing speciality coffee but also high quality matcha in multiple seasonal variations. They also have homemade (vegan) banana bread and matcha cake so it’s the perfect spot for a lovely cake & coffee/ matcha date in the heart of the city.
Location: Rilkeplatz 2, 1040
Fenstercafe: Ever tried coffee served in a chocolate-dipped waffle cone? In the heart of Vienna, in the historic 1st district, the legendary Fenstercafe is serving up the Fensterccino: a unique coffee experience where your cappuccino comes inside a crunchy chocolate waffle instead of a cup. This hidden gem is a must-try for coffee lovers in Vienna!
Location: Griechengasse 10, 1010
Café Délice Vienna: My trusted barista, Meysam, already knows how I love my cappuccino and is always so super happy when I pass by for my coffee break and a chat with him - he really knows how to make a beautiful and super delicious cappuccino 😋
Location: Skodagasse 23, 1080
Barista united: This speciality coffee shop offers a great selection of freshly roasted coffees from their own roastery in Vienna's 3rd district. I also participated in their coffee workshop where I learned everything about latte art, espresso preparation or filter coffee from a professional barista.
Location: Landstraßer Hauptstraße 34, 1030
No Panic Coffee: One of my fav coffee shops with two locations in Vienna (1040 and 1090) You can expect really good coffee, great service (you get e.g. more water without asking) and a nice vibe - will need to come back for the brunch & cake 😍
Locations: Paniglgasse 18-20, 1040 and Währinger Straße 06-08, 1090
Balthasar Coffee Bar: This place is not only a really nice coffee shop, but also a great spot to get some work done. You can select from batch brew, V60, cold bred, cold drip and Chemex.
Location: Praterstraße 38, 1020
Kaffein: Hidden in the lesser known streets of the beautiful 1st. district you can find this laid back coffee shop with a nice atmosphere and great speciality coffee! There is also a second new location, Kaffein Zeitgest, in Schulerstraße 1010 Vienna, which you should also visit!
Location: 3 Stoß im Himmel, 1010
Lieben Wir: this cute speciality coffee shop and concept store located in the heart of the 1st district should be very high on your list! The lovely team offers high quality coffee & beans and you can also enjoy some tasty homemade treats.
Location: Gonzagagasse 5, 1010
Kaffemikcoffee: Austrian Specialty Coffee Shop and Micro Roastery in the middle of the 7th district with vegan pastries (try the cookie!). The cute spot should be high on your list, in summer I love to enjoy my coffee in their lovely outside seating area.
Location: Zollergasse 5, 1070
The Pelican Coffee Company: Another great coffee shop in my hood serving great speciality coffee (with water!) and offering delicious (vegan) sweet treats such as cake 🍰
Location: Pelikangasse 4, 1090
CoffeePirates: Where you can find me for working on my blog or a coffee to go to enjoy in the closely Altes AKH park - super good coffee in a nice work-friendly atmosphere 👩🏼💻
Location: Spitalgasse 17, 1090
Koun Coffee: this speciality coffee shop has long been on my list and I’m so happy I finally visited the lovely Koun coffee in the 4th district. Next to their amazing speciality coffee you can also find specials such as ube latte and matcha. Also you can try their vegan ube cornetto and I really like their outside seating area.
